ISIS claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack at an Orthodox church in Jordan

The ISIS group officially claimed responsibility for the armed attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in the Jordanian village of Hamud, which took place on October 23, 2026. The incident occurred during a funeral in the province of Karak, resulting in significant casualties and sparking a wave of international condemnation.
According to reports, the attackers opened fire on people gathered at the church. As a result of this tragic incident, the death toll rose to nine, most of whom were members of the Halasa family—a well-known Christian family. About 25 injured people remain in medical facilities under the care of doctors.
In their statement, the militants described their actions as “punishment” for Christians, carrying out the attack in retaliation for their radical views. At the same time, the Jordanian government currently classifies the attackers as a “group of extremists,” refraining from hasty conclusions about direct links to foreign terrorist networks, although law enforcement agencies have already identified the suspects.
King Abdullah II of Jordan visited the survivors in the hospital, promising to punish all those involved in the crime with an “iron fist.” World leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb, expressed strong condemnation of the attack. Earlier, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem also issued a statement on the matter. A three-day period of mourning has been declared in the country in connection with the tragedy.
