26.6 million hryvnias have been allocated for the restoration of the Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve has initiated a series of emergency repair and conservation works at the Assumption Cathedral, which sustained significant damage as a result of the recent nighttime shelling of Kyiv. According to “KyivVlada,” 26.61 million hryvnias have been allocated for this purpose.
Under the terms of the contract signed on September 29, 2026, the contractor undertakes to dismantle the destroyed metal structures and roofing by December 25, 2026, clear the interior of the cathedral of construction debris, and reinforce and restore the building’s roof.
Maksym Ostapenko, the reserve’s director general, noted that the conservation work is only the first stage. He estimates that a full-scale restoration of the Assumption Cathedral will take at least two years. At present, damage has been documented to both the exterior and interior finishes of the cathedral. It is noteworthy that immediately after the incident, all ancient icons and church relics were evacuated from the cathedral. According to Ostapenko’s preliminary estimates, the total damage to the cathedral amounts to approximately 15 million euros.
As a reminder, the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which was damaged as a result of the shelling of Kyiv by Russian forces, is being prepared for extensive conservation and subsequent restoration work. According to estimates by the reserve’s administration, the full restoration of the historic site will take about two years, after which the cathedral will once again be open to worshippers and visitors.
