In the U.S., the Trump Foundation awarded a $35,000 grant to study the mental health of “LGBT people giving birth”

The Donald Trump Foundation "U.S. National Institutes of Health" (NIH) has allocated $35,000 to fund a research project focused on the mental well-being of sexual and gender minorities during pregnancy and after childbirth. According to The College Fix, the initiative has sparked a mixed reaction in the public sphere.

The project, led by University of Maryland graduate student Ponda Ezra, is scheduled to run from 2026 to 2029. The main objective of the study is to analyze the impact of social support and the quality of medical care on the well-being of lesbians and gender-nonconforming individuals. The authors of the study argue that the needs of this group differ significantly from those of “heterosexual cisgender women,” which requires the development of specialized medical care protocols.

The initiative has faced harsh criticism from the “Independent Women’s Forum.” The organization’s senior legal counsel, Beth Parlato, called the use of public funds for such research an attempt to introduce gender ideology into science. According to the expert, replacing the traditional term “women” with the phrase “people who give birth” constitutes a conceptual substitution that erases the biological aspects of pregnancy, which could ultimately have a negative impact on the quality of research in the field of women’s health.
