Cardinal Matteo Zuppi has arrived in Moscow once again to "broker peace" between Russia and Ukraine

The Pope’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Issues, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, has arrived in Moscow for a three-day visit that will run from September 28 to 30. According to Vatican News, this is the cardinal’s third trip to the Russian capital as part of his mediation efforts aimed at resolving the consequences of the conflict.

During this mission, which was authorized by Pope Leo XIV, Cardinal Zuppi will focus his efforts on addressing acute humanitarian issues. The agenda includes issues related to the exchange of prisoners of war, as well as the situation of children separated from their families due to the hostilities. According to the cardinal himself, as part of the dialogue, the parties continue to assess requests coming from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides.

Cardinal Zuppi’s visit is a continuation of the Holy See’s active diplomatic efforts. Earlier, in late August, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, visited Russia. Such initiatives underscore the Vatican’s commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and its desire to foster a dialogue that could alleviate the suffering of the civilian population and bring the conflict closer to an end.
