A large-scale restoration of the dome of St. Sophia Cathedral has begun in Kyiv

Important emergency repair and restoration work has begun on the southeastern dome of St. Sophia Cathedral in the Ukrainian capital. Specialists have started restoring the historic site, which has not undergone comprehensive restoration for more than 50 years.

According to Ukrinform, citing a statement by Vadym Kyrylenko, first deputy director general of the “Saint Sophia of Kyiv” National Reserve, the current work includes erecting scaffolding and installing a special protective canopy. These measures are necessary to ensure the structural integrity of the building during the restoration process. The last time similar work was carried out on this dome was back in the 1970s.

The project is funded by the general fund with significant support from patrons. The restoration of this architectural monument of global significance has taken on particular urgency in light of recent events: previously, a shock wave from a Russian drone striking the neighboring SBU building caused damage to the windows of St. Sophia Cathedral, which requires additional attention to the condition of the entire complex of buildings within the reserve.
