Where do Orthodox Christians live in the United States?

The report “Marking the Orthodox Churches of America on the Map: Geography of Parishes and Parishioners in 2010-2020” has been published on the portal “Orthodox Reality” by the American researcher Alexei Krindach. The material was prepared on the basis of the 2020 census of Orthodox parishes in the United States, the “Center Chrisma” writes.

The report notes that almost half of the adherents of Orthodoxy in the United States (48%) live in just 6 states: California, New York, Illinois, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

At the same time, Orthodox parishes exist in all states. Alaska stands out in particular, accounting for 4% of all parishes – the same share as, for example, in the large states of Illinois and New Jersey. Thus, the labors of Russian missionaries in the early 19th century in Alaska are still visible today.

Most Orthodox Christians live in New York (33 thousand), Chicago (30 thousand) and Houston (10 thousand).
