The Jerusalem Patriarchate Condemns Pressure on the ROC in Estonia: “Faith Must Not Be Weaponized”

The Jerusalem Patriarchate has issued an official statement following the adoption of a new law by the Estonian parliament that forces religious communities to sever ties with the Russian Orthodox Church. The statement expresses deep concern about the impact of this law on thousands of believers in churches and monasteries throughout Estonia. “The Jerusalem Patriarchate firmly stands for the right to safe and free worship,” the document emphasizes. The statement was published on the official website of the Jerusalem Patriarchate.
The Patriarchate drew a parallel with the situation in Jerusalem itself, where restrictions on religious freedom are felt annually during the Holy Fire celebrations. “There is no reason to weaponize religious belief and practice against peaceful people,” the statement declares.
Alongside a call for the Estonian government to reconsider the law, the Patriarchate issues a broader appeal to the Orthodox world: “Within our Church, this is yet another example of the urgent need for unity.” The document stresses that the Church must direct its efforts not toward division, but toward “dialogue and healing,” as “the world is weary of conflict.”
The Patriarchate also expressed its willingness to facilitate reconciliation within the Orthodox community: “The Jerusalem Patriarchate, rooted in centuries of reconciliation and efforts for peace, extends a hand of goodwill and mediation to our brother Patriarchs.”
“Let us come together to sow the seeds of peace and healing, to bring an end to suffering and promote healing within the Orthodox family,” the statement concludes.
It is also worth noting that on April 24, 2025, the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church (EOCC) issued an official statement expressing sincere gratitude to the President of the Republic of Estonia, Alar Karis, for his principled stance regarding the draft law on amendments to the Churches and Parishes Act.
