Members of the Verkhovna Rada visited the UOC Cathedral in Chernihiv, which was expropriated by the state

On June 16, 2025, members of the Verkhovna Rada’s parliamentary committee on humanitarian and information policy held an off-site meeting at the Transfiguration Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Chernihiv, which was expropriated from the Church by the state last year. One of the main issues discussed during the event was the increase in funding for the local Historical and Architectural Reserve “Ancient Chernihiv,” which has taken on the responsibility of maintaining the religious building in proper condition. This was reported by the regional publication PECHERA.INFO.

It is reported that the general director of the “Ancient Chernihiv” reserve, Natalia Rebrova, gave the deputies and members of the delegation a tour of the Transfiguration Cathedral. The elected representatives spoke with the restorers who are “working to repair the damage caused by the presence of representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in the cathedral.” In their comments, the deputies emphasized their attention and interest in increasing funding for the reserve.

«It was very important for us to see how the Ancient Chernihiv Reserve is developing after finally getting rid of Moscow’s influence. We will raise the issue of adequate funding for such a unique reserve as Ancient Chernihiv. Because this is a place of our spiritual strength, one of the places where the Rus’ land originated,» — said the committee chairman, deputy from the Servant of the People party Mykyta Poturaiev.

Earlier, Natalia Rebrova, director general of the Chernihiv Ancient Reserve, said that the institution would continue to use the churches of Chernihiv taken from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church not for their intended purpose but for organizing secular and cultural events. Rebrova argues that since these churches are architectural monuments that are a historical heritage, they cannot be used exclusively for worship.
