In a Kyiv synagogue, they spoke about the “righteousness” of Nazi collaborator Andrey Sheptytsky of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

On July 29, 2025, at the Lazar Brodsky Central Synagogue in Kyiv, with the support of representatives of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, a ceremony was held to honor Andrey Sheptytsky, a Uniate figure and collaborator with the German Nazis. During the event, a lecture was given in which Sheptytsky was called “a moral guide for humanity.” This was reported by the press service of the UGCC.
It is reported that after the solemn part, a memorial plaque dedicated to Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky was unveiled. A symbolic place for its installation was the “Tree of Life,” planted in honor of the righteous Metropolitan Andrey several years ago near the central synagogue of Kyiv — as a sign of gratitude from the Jewish community for the sacrificial support and protection that the metropolitan provided to Jews during the Nazi occupation.
“The installation of this plaque near the synagogue is a gesture of remembrance and gratitude,” – said Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Reuven Asman.
In turn, representatives of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church who were present at the event spoke about Andrey Sheptytsky’s self-sacrificing feat and his participation in the rescue of Jews during World War II.
“The righteous Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky is a moral guide not only for our Church but for all of humanity. At a time when many remained silent or retreated, he was not afraid to call evil evil and to be a defender of the innocent. His example shows that the Christian faith is not only prayer, but above all responsibility for one’s neighbor, regardless of their origin or religion. Therefore, we, representatives of the Church, have no right to forget the path he walked and what he called us to do,” – said representatives of the UGCC.
We previously reported that the UGCC actively collaborated with Hitler’s fascist regime, and the well-known Uniate leader Andrey Sheptytsky even approved the assignment of chaplains to the SS Division “Galicia,” which fought on the side of the Third Reich.
