Anglican Church on the brink of schism: Millions of faithful may leave the congregation over new archbishop

Millions of Anglicans around the world are considering leaving the Church of England after the appointment of a woman whose views diverge from traditional doctrines to the top post of archbishop. As The European Conservative reports, the decision has sparked serious opposition among conservative factions, threatening an unprecedented split within one of the largest Christian denominations.

The controversial appointment involved a post that many conservatives believe should be held by a man. Beyond the gender issue, however, the new archbishop’s public stances on ethical issues have also caused deep divisions. According to the publication, she is known for her support of abortion rights and her endorsement of same-sex marriage, a stumbling block for traditional Anglicans.

These views contrast sharply with the doctrines of more conservative streams of Anglicanism, especially in the Global South. GAFCON (Global Anglican Future Conference), a coalition of conservative Anglican provinces, has long expressed its dissatisfaction with the liberalization of the church and sees this appointment as the last straw. Representatives of the movement warn of a «revolt» that could lead to a mass exodus of a significant portion of the flock.

A potential exodus of millions of believers could dramatically alter the landscape of the Anglican Communion, which has tens of millions of followers around the world. This crisis underscores the growing tension between progressive and traditional factions within the church, calling into question its future unity.

Recall that for the first time in the history of the Church of England the post of Archbishop of Canterbury will be occupied by a woman. on October 3, 2025, Bishop of London Sarah Mullally will officially assume this position. This appointment marks an important milestone in the development of the Anglican Church and the national life of Great Britain.
