Zelensky is going to solve the issue with the UOC "in accordance with European legislation"

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the state’s attitude to the issue of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church will strictly comply with European legislation and international law. This statement was made against the background of ongoing discussions about the status of the Church in the country.

According to RBC-Ukraine, the head of state voiced his position while speaking to journalists on December 11. Answering a question about the possible influence of the United States on Russia’s position on the status of the UOC, Zelensky said: «We have in the draft framework agreement, those 20 points, everything is written in accordance with international law. There is international law — this is a fact that everyone should recognize, and this is the only thing that can unite everyone.»

He also emphasized that Ukraine’s approach to this issue was formed taking into account the country’s future membership in the European Union, focusing on the basic norms of the EU.

«Therefore, the attitude to such issues will be consistent with European legislation — to those norms that are basic for the European Union», — added Zelensky.

We will remind, earlier the Financial Times reported on a new draft peace plan for Ukraine, which was prepared jointly by representatives of the United States and Russia. According to the publication dated November 19, 2025, the 28-point document was handed over to the Kiev authorities and contains conditions concerning the status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
