In Cherkassy region, the prosecutor's office through the court formalizes the ownership of UOC churches

In Cherkasy Region, the prosecutor’s office initiated a series of lawsuits to formalize state ownership of a number of churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which are officially recognized as architectural monuments. These measures are aimed at strengthening state control over the objects of cultural heritage of the XVIII century. This is reported by the regional edition “Pro All”.
In particular, Zvenigorod district Prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit in defense of St. George’s Church of 1785. The court satisfied the requirements of the agency, arguing the decision that the lack of a properly formalized right of state ownership creates potential risks for the preservation of the historical object. A similar decision was made in relation to the Church of St. Demetrius of Solunsk on the claim of Smelyansky District Prosecutor’s Office against Cherkassy Regional State Administration.
Special attention of the agencies is focused on the Transfiguration Church of Krasnogorsk Monastery, built in 1757. This object has the status of an architectural monument of national importance and was entered into the state register in 2024. Zolotonosha District Prosecutor’s Office insists that the temple was taken out of state ownership without legal grounds. At the moment, the court proceedings on this case are ongoing, and the situation around the Krasnogorsk monastery of Cherkassy diocese remains the subject of close attention of the public.
Recall, earlier we reported that the Cassation Economic Court in Kiev will consider the case on the belonging of the temple of the Odessa diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in honor of the Kursk-Korena icon of the Mother of God “Znamenie”. The prosecutor’s office insists on recognizing the building as state property, despite the fact that the courts of two instances earlier confirmed the ownership of the religious community.
