Belgian radio station Studio Brussel apologized for publicly destroying Christian statues

Belgian state-run youth radio station Studio Brussel has officially apologized for a video in which presenters smashed statues of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. The incident, which took place as part of an entertainment segment, sparked a wave of criticism and reignited a debate about respect for religious feelings in a secular society.

According to Christian Today, the scandalous episode was timed to coincide with the so-called «Sad Monday» (Blue Monday). According to the idea of the authors, listeners shared their problems, and the hosts responded by destroying various objects on air to help the audience cope with a bad mood. However, the use of Christian relics as props was perceived by many as an insult to the faith.

The situation was publicized after the Radiodays Europe conference in Riga, where EWTN News correspondent Colm Flynn asked the presenters a direct question about the permissibility of such actions. Presenter Sam De Bruijn tried to justify himself by saying that Belgium is a highly secular country and the segment should not have caused outrage, also noting that the statues had already been damaged. Nevertheless, when asked by a reporter if they would dare to do something similar with symbols of Islam or Judaism, De Bruijn admitted that it would be «dangerous.» The presenters argued that their own Catholic upbringing supposedly gives them the right to make such jokes about Christianity.

An official statement from the broadcaster following the incident acknowledged that the team had «underestimated the sensitivity of religious symbols» to a large segment of the population. The radio station confirmed that the segment was mistakenly intended to be purely humorous and stressed that from now on, staff are obliged to show respect for all religions without exception. According to statistics, despite the high degree of secularization (59% of non-believers), Catholicism remains the largest religious tradition in Belgium.
