The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted in favor of banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

On August 20, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine considered the scandalous bill No. 8371 “On Amending Certain Laws of Ukraine Concerning the Activities of Religious Organizations in Ukraine” aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. As a result of brief discussions in the session hall of the Ukrainian parliament, the bill to ban the UOC was voted and adopted as a basis and as a whole.

It is reported that for the ban of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church voted 265 people’s deputies, of which: “Servant of the people” – 173, ‘European Solidarity’ – 25, ‘Voice’ – 18, ‘For the Future’ – , ‘Batkivshchyna’ – 17, ‘Trust’, – 11, ‘PZZZhM’ – 1, extra-factional deputies – 11, ‘Revival of Ukraine’ – 0. 4 MPs abstained from voting. Did not vote – 24.

We will remind, earlier we reported that the head of the international human rights company “Amsterdam & Partners LLP” Robert Amsterdam, representing the legal interests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, said that the initiators of the ban of the UOC will be punished deservedly. The lawyer added that he would fight for the rights of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church despite threats from the SBU.
