On December 26, 2024, a meeting between Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was held at the presidential residence in Ankara. During the meeting they discussed issues of state-church relations, preparation of the visit of Pope Francis to Turkey and the celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council. It is reported that the sides discussed the celebrations planned for next year on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council in Nicea (325-2025). In addition, the issue of preparations for the visit of Pope Francis to Turkey to participate in the celebration of the anniversary was discussed. Patriarch Bartholomew, among other things, thanked President Erdoğan for his assistance in opening a theological school on the island of Halki, calling for further assistance.
