World Council of Churches calls to stop the war in Ukraine

On the third anniversary of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Secretary General of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Professor Jerry Pillay, called for an end to the fighting in Ukraine. Pillay noted that the war continues without any signs of an immediate end, while people are senselessly dying and civilian infrastructure is being destroyed. The statement was published on the official website of the WCC.

“The futility of this war is reflected in the huge casualties among civilians and children, as well as in the destruction and displacement of the population. Crucial civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals and water supplies, has been damaged or destroyed, often as a result of targeted attacks,” — said the head of the WCC.

He added that the war in Ukraine needs to end as soon as possible, and all means to achieve peace must be supported by the entire international community.

“We reiterate our call for dialogue and negotiations to ensure a sustainable, just peace. The AUCC welcomes any legitimate efforts that are genuinely aimed at achieving a lasting peace in the region, without simply rewarding the aggression committed and the violation of many principles of international law established after World War II to protect vulnerable populations from the encroachment of the powerful,” — Pillay added.

As reported, on February 7, 2025, while participating in the Ukrainian Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., the head of the OCU Epiphany Dumenko made a speech in which he hinted at the need to restore Ukraine’s nuclear status. Dumenko complained that Ukraine had once abandoned nuclear weapons, which resulted in Russia’s invasion. Now, in his opinion, in order for the country to resist Russian aggression, it needs “the very sword” that will help Ukraine to survive.
