Italian Prime Minister Meloni Discusses Peace Talks on Ukraine with Pope Leo XIV

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a phone call with Pope Leo XIV, during which they discussed the possibility of organizing peace talks aimed at establishing lasting peace in Ukraine. She shared the news on the social platform X.

According to Meloni, the dialogue took place against the backdrop of recent contacts with U.S. President Donald Trump and other European leaders. During the call, the Italian Prime Minister received confirmation from the Holy Father regarding the Vatican’s readiness to host negotiations between the parties involved in the conflict.

“Upon receiving confirmation from the Holy Father of his willingness to host future negotiations between the parties at the Vatican, I expressed my deep gratitude for his openness and unwavering commitment to the cause of peace,” Meloni stated.

She also mentioned coordination efforts with other global leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Finnish President Sanna Marin, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The common goal of these talks is to achieve a ceasefire and reach a peace agreement.

It is also worth noting that Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin revealed the destinations of Pope Leo XIV’s first foreign visits. Despite global expectations and the current international agenda, the Pontiff’s first official visit will not be to Kyiv but to Nicaea, where he will travel jointly with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to commemorate the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council.
