Earlier, Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople said that together with the late Pope Francis, they worked to bring the Orthodox and Catholic Churches closer together. The head of the Phanar called the Pope “brother,” noting that this year they were planning to meet to mark the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council, but “the God of life and death decreed otherwise.”
Pope calls on Christian churches to develop a single date for Easter celebration

Pope Leo XIV has reaffirmed his commitment to the idea of unifying the date of Easter, which was previously expressed by his predecessor, Pope Francis. The pontiff believes that the First Ecumenical Council, whose anniversary is celebrated this year, should become an example and a basis for the further development of ecumenical dialogue. He said this during a meeting with representatives of the Local Orthodox and Ancient Eastern Churches.
“What unites us is much stronger – both quantitatively and qualitatively – than what divides us.” The common confession of the faith set forth in Nicaea opens new horizons in overcoming the remaining theological differences and restoring communion. […] I would like to reaffirm the readiness of the Catholic Church to seek an ecumenical solution that would contribute to the joint celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord,” – the Vatican head said.
