European Churches Call for Just Peace in Ukraine

The Conference of European Churches (CEC) has expressed serious concern over recent high-level meetings of U.S. President Donald Trump with leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Europe. Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira, President of CEC, emphasized the importance of responsible decisions by political leaders in the context of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. This was reported on the Orthodox Times website.

“CEC urges political leaders to take actions that will put an end to the killings and establish a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” said the Archbishop.

The CEC statement says the organization affirms its solidarity with Ukrainian churches and has joined the appeal of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (UCCRO) to hold a World Prayer for Ukraine on 24 August 2025, Ukraine’s Independence Day. In addition, the European Churches support the UCCRO statement affirming Ukraine’s right to defend its sovereignty and independently determine its path of development and international relations.

Earlier reports noted that on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day, a prayer for Ukraine was held at St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. In addition to President Volodymyr Zelensky, representatives of various religious denominations in Ukraine and several foreign organizations participated in the ecumenical event.
