Romanian Patriarch Discusses Support for Peace in Ukraine with U.S. Envoy

On August 27, 2025, at the patriarchal residence, the Romanian Patriarch Daniel met with Paolo Zampolli, the U.S. President’s Special Envoy for Global Partnerships. During the meeting, the parties discussed the importance of inter-Christian and interfaith dialogue, as well as ways to promote peace in Ukraine. This was reported by Orthodoxia News Agency.
Patriarch Daniel emphasized the importance of strengthening spiritual and cultural ties between peoples and particularly highlighted U.S. President Donald Trump as a defender and promoter of Christian values.
The American diplomat stressed the special importance of global interfaith dialogue in the context of current crises and military conflicts, including the war in Ukraine. In response, Patriarch Daniel recalled the prayers for peace being offered in all Romanian Church parishes, as well as the need for spiritual and material support for Ukrainian refugees.
Earlier reports noted that for nearly a year, the State Service for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience (DESS) of Ukraine has not made a decision regarding the registration of the Religious Association of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Ukraine. On August 28, 2024, lawyer Yevhenii Patrash, acting on behalf of three religious communities—one from Chernivtsi region and two from Odesa—submitted the corresponding registration application. According to current legislation, DESS was supposed to decide by November 28, 2024, but the process was halted without explanation.
