Greece announces funding for the restoration of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem

The Greek government will allocate funds for the restoration and improvement of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This was announced by Greek Minister of Education, Religion and Sports Sofia Zaharaki during her visit to the Holy Land. The move continues Athens’ long tradition of supporting the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and is aimed at preserving one of the main Christian holy sites.

According to the source, the statement was made on November 23, 2025, during the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the enthronement of Patriarch Theophilos III. Minister Sofia Zacharaki emphasized that the spiritual and pastoral mission of the Patriarchate is an « unwavering beacon» for the region, and Greece remains unwaveringly committed to cooperation and assistance.

In addition to funding the restoration, Greece provides other support to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. In particular, the Minister recalled the significant role of the Patriarchal School of Zion, where Athens sends teachers and supplies teaching materials. During the meeting with Patriarch Theophilos III, the prospects for the reopening of the Holy Cross Theological School and the expansion of cooperation with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki were also discussed.

During the visit, the Greek delegation also visited Bethlehem, where they discussed plans for the restoration of the Grotto of the Nativity and the problems facing Christians in the Middle East. The Greek government notes that the allocated funds have not only cultural but also spiritual significance, as they are aimed at supporting vulnerable Christian communities and preserving shrines associated with key events of the faith.

Recall, Patriarch Theophilus III of Jerusalem announced the successful resolution of recent pastoral and organizational difficulties in the life of the Orthodox community at Mount Sinai. The announcement was made on November 19, 2025 during a meeting with representatives of the Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Orthodoxy, who are in the Holy Land on a pilgrimage visit.
