Georgian Patriarchate condemns blasphemous performance during anti-government protest rally

The Georgian Orthodox Church has condemned the blasphemous performance that took place in Tbilisi during another anti-government protest. It is reported that the other day, protesters occupying the central avenue of the Georgian capital demonstratively burned a coffin with an image of the Lord Jesus Christ on it. The GOC believes that such an expression of political opinion is direct blasphemy and should not take place in Georgia. The statement of the Georgian Church was published on the website of the Public Relations Service of the Georgian Patriarchate.
“We are witnessing extreme manifestations of hatred. It is sad that it has come to occult rituals against the backdrop of the ongoing disagreements. These and similar facts remind us of the difficult period of attacks on churches with their desecration that we experienced in the recent past. We believe that some protesters were involved in these actions without realizing it, although in all cases they should recognize the seriousness of their actions and show appropriate remorse,” — the statement reads.
Earlier we reported that the head of the OCU Epiphany Dumenko supported the anti-government protests that continue in Georgia. Dumenko said that he wishes Georgians to become a “free European nation.”
