Kirovohrad City Council transfers one of the city's UOC churches to OCU

.On March 25, 2025, the City Council of Kropyvnytskyi (formerly Kirovohrad — ed.) transferred the local Holy Protection Church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with a complex of adjacent premises to the OCU. The church was transferred at the request of a number of public organizations, and now it will be a “garrison church”. This is reported by the regional edition of the First Electronic Newspaper.

It is reported that the Holy Protection Church with outbuildings with a total area of 450.4 m² was transferred to the OCU for free use for a period of 25 years. The decision was made by the deputies on March 25, during the session. “27 deputies voted in favor. The city council claims that the religious community of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which had been using the church all along, had no legal grounds for this.

“The church was used without legal grounds by the parish of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate, a self-governing part of the Russian Orthodox Church, which, in our opinion, is unacceptable. The creation of a garrison church in the city is a logical continuation of the struggle against the Russian occupiers. Therefore, today the deputies voted for a historic decision for our community. I thank everyone who made every effort to restore historical justice! Finally, Ukrainian prayer will be heard here! This temple will definitely become a place of strength and support for the military and their families, a place to honor the fallen Heroes!”, — said Yana Pshenitsyna, a representative of the region’s NGOs.

Earlier, ukrainian MP Ihor Huz spoke about the future of the Holy Dormition Cathedral in Volodymyr-Volynskyi, which also houses the diocesan administration and theological school. According to the deputy, the public expects that after the court decision to transfer the complex to state ownership, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church should voluntarily leave the premises and not put up any resistance. Otherwise, the deputy threatens that he will attract several hundred people from the “patriotic public” who will ensure the transfer of the Cathedral to the state and the OCU.
