In France, a court hands over an Orthodox church and a Russian cemetery to the Russia

On April 25, 2025, the Court of Appeal of the French city of Aix-en-Provence ruled that the St. Nicholas Church and the territory of the Russian cemetery in Nice be transferred to Russian ownership. Previously, the church and cemetery were claimed by the local community. This was reported by the local newspaper Nice-Matin.

It is reported that the local cultural association ACOR-Nice (part of the Romanian Patriarchate) laid claim to the property in question, given that “the land was privately purchased by Russian citizens who lived in Nice, and therefore belongs to the local community.” For their part, representatives of the Russian Federation insist that they belong to it as the successor to the Russian Empire, which bought the land back in the nineteenth century.

Thus, the court put an end to the litigation, which lasted almost 15 years. Now the church is at the full disposal of the Korsun Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Earlier, the Belgian media proposed a public discussion on the presence of the Russian Orthodox Church in Belgium. A journalist from one of the publications accuses the ROC of threatening national security and the Belgian government of still sponsoring the Russian Church. The media compared the “threats” emanating from the Russian Orthodox Church to the problem of Islamization of Belgium and called for the issue of restricting the activities of the ROC in the country.
