British parliamentarian condemns the initiative to ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

Lord Peterborough Stewart Jackson, a prominent member of the all-party parliamentary group on freedom of religion or belief in the British Parliament, expressed serious concern over possible actions by the Ukrainian authorities to restrict the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He made these remarks in an interview with the British publication “Daily Express.”
The politician emphasized that even in a state of war, Ukraine does not have the right to forfeit fundamental civil liberties.
According to Lord Jackson, the fight against aggression from Russia should not be used as a reason to abandon the fundamental principles of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.
He also warned that the forced closure of the country’s oldest church institution could become a source of social tension and potential conflicts in the future.
Earlier, we also reported that the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Vershinin, during a meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Moratinos, called on the international community to pay attention to the repression against the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Estonian Orthodox Church.
