In the Ternopil region, an official was tried for registering real estate in favor of the Pochaiv Lavra

The Shumsk District Court fined Roman Pylypchuk, head of the state registration department of the Shumsk City Council, 68,000 hryvnias for illegally registering several properties located on the territory of the Holy Dormition Pochaiv Lavra, according to the prosecution. in favor of the Holy Dormition Pochaiv Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Shumsk District Court’s ruling states that in November 2017, Roman Pylypchuk was appointed to the position of state registrar of the State Registration Department of the Shumsk City Council. Four years later, he became the head of the state registration department.

In October 2021, Roman Pylypchuk received an application from representatives of the Holy Dormition Pochaiv Lavra to register the right to real estate for the monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The priests asked to register the Chapel of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, with an area of 9.2 m2, located on the territory of the Pochaiv Lavra, in their name. Roman Pylypchuk registered this chapel under the legal entity “Pochaiv Holy Dormition Lavra of the Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.”

In December of the same year, the official again registered three farm buildings on the territory of the Lavra, with an area of 156 m2, 979 m2, and 184 m2, under the diocese of the UOC.

During the court hearing, Roman Pylypchuk did not admit his guilt. He noted that at that time he believed that the submitted package of documents was sufficient for registration.

However, the Shumsk District Court found the man guilty and sentenced him to a fine of 68,000 hryvnias and imprisonment for a term of five years with deprivation of the right to hold positions related to the performance of organizational, administrative, and economic functions for a period of three years. Subsequently, the court released him from serving the main sentence, imposing a probation period of 2.5 years.

It is also worth recalling that the Ternopil Regional Prosecutor’s Office previously launched an investigation aimed at expropriating a 12-hectare land plot on which the Holy Dormition Pochaiv Lavra of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is located. Prosecutors claim that the land was unlawfully transferred to the monastery, and legal action is expected to follow soon.
