The court transferred the Uspensky Cathedral in Kanev, which was taken away from the UOC, into state ownership

The Supreme Court of Ukraine has issued a final ruling transferring the ancient Holy Dormition (St. George) Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kaniv to state ownership. The local prosecutor’s office filed a lawsuit against the Cherkasy Diocese of the UOC on this issue. This is reported by the publication “Suspilne.Cherkasy”.

“For a long time, it was illegally owned by the Kyiv Metropolis of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Supreme Court, following a cassation review of the court decisions, agreed with the arguments of the prosecutor and the conclusions of the lower courts that the historical building belongs to the entire Ukrainian people,” – said Svitlana Chubenko, a spokeswoman for the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

It should be noted that on August 10, 2024, a meeting of the territorial community was held in Kaniv, Cherkasy region, to decide the fate of the future confessional affiliation of the local ancient Holy Dormition Cathedral to the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. By a roll call vote, the church was “transferred” to the OCU.
