In the Kyiv Cave Monastery, a cross collapsed from the dome of the church, which is the responsibility of the state

On March 8, 2025, the State Emergency Service received a call with information that a cross had collapsed on one of the churches of the Kyiv Cave Monastery. The said religious building was the All Saints Church, located on the territory of the Upper Lavra, which is jointly used by the National Reserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” and the OCU. This is reported by the official website of the State Emergency Service.

It is reported that upon arrival, the rescuers found that a cross had partially collapsed on the dome of one of the churches. To safely dismantle the structure, the rescuers used a crank lift. They climbed up to the cross, carefully cut the wire and safely lowered it to the ground.

It is worth noting that the All Saints Church of the Kyiv Cave Monastery is an architectural monument of national importance, built in 1696-1698 as a cross-domed five-domed Ukrainian wooden church at the expense of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, whose family coat of arms adorns the northern facade of the church. In recent years, due to the state’s attempts to expel the UOC monastic community from the territory of the Kyiv Cave Monastery, the church has not been used for its intended purpose, being in the area of full responsibility of the Kyiv Cave Monastery National Reserve and the local unit of the OCU, which joined the foundation.

We recently reported that the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine has formed a special commission to “check the relics” of the Kyiv Cave Monks, who rest in the Holy Dormition Kyiv Cave Monastery. It is not known what kind of “inspection” the commission will conduct, since, according to the Ministry, the results of its work will be classified.
