"Black smoke over the Vatican": The conclave did not elect a pope on the first try

On the evening of May 7, 2025, during the conclave held in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, the first vote in the election of the new Pope took place. The black smoke over St. Peter’s Square was an indication that the first vote at the conclave was inconclusive.

According to the procedure, the voting will continue tomorrow and will last until one of the candidates receives at least 89 votes of the cardinals. The conclave began on May 7. It is attended by 133 cardinals representing all continents of the world. The newly elected pontiff who receives the required majority will become the 267th head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Earlier it was reported that the representative of the UGCC, Mykola Bychok, will be one of the 133 cardinals who will take part in the conclave to elect the new Pope. He is also considered one of the potential candidates for this position, although he avoids discussing this possibility.
