Member of the European Parliament: Persecution of priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church cannot be ignored

Petar Volgin, a Bulgarian Member of the European Parliament (Europe of Sovereign Nations Party), has stated that Ukraine’s accession to the EU is unacceptable until the rule of law prevails in the country. Among other things, Volgin is concerned about the unjustified persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, its clergy, and believers. He made this statement during his speech in the European Parliament, according to POGLED.INFO.
«There are several key issues that supporters of Ukraine’s rapid accession to the European Union do not mention. First, there is endemic corruption, which Ukrainians themselves call the biggest problem in the country after the war. Recently, President Zelensky tried to bring two key anti-corruption bodies under his control, which would completely strip them of their power. Second, there is no mention of the persecution suffered by clergymen of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Without any evidence, they are accused of spying for Russia, persecuted, imprisoned, and convicted,» — Volgin said.
We will remind you that recently, the official representative of the EU’s foreign policy service, Peter Stano, stated that the European Union as a whole is aware of the actions of the Ukrainian authorities aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Without expressing his own opinion on this matter, Stano only noted that “Ukraine as a whole ensures freedom of religion.”
