In Boston, a 112-year-old church is being converted into an affordable housing complex

In Boston, one of the most expensive cities in the United States, the historic 112-year-old Church of the Holy Communion, vacant for two decades, will be converted into a modern apartment complex. The project will create 55 affordable housing apartments targeting low- and moderate-income residents, an important step in addressing the city’s housing crisis while preserving its architectural heritage.

Boston’s affordable housing shortage is a particularly acute problem. As UNN reports, the median housing cost in the city is as high as $800,000, and the average rent in the Latin Quarter neighborhood, where the church is located, is about $3,200 a month. The new project is designed to offer apartments at significantly reduced rents for those whose income is below the regional median.

All 55 apartments in the remodeled building will be distributed among residents of varying income levels. 27 apartments are for those whose income is 60% of the area median income (AMI), 11 are for those earning 30%, and the rest are for other categories. The apartment complex will have 17 studios, 25 one-bedroom and 13 two-bedroom apartments. Special attention is paid to the most vulnerable segments of the population: six apartments will be specially reserved for people who previously had no permanent housing.

In addition to solving the housing issue, the project aims to preserve the historical value of the building. Most of the exterior and the unique facade of the five-story church will be preserved. In addition, a 200-person community space will be created on the first floor for events and performances celebrating Afro-Latin arts and culture.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the renovation will “add critically needed housing to the neighborhood for people of all income levels while preserving the historic architecture of the church.” The project is part of a larger initiative by the mayor’s office to create 802 units of affordable housing in the city. Thus, the conversion of Holy Communion Church becomes a beneficial solution that saves the landmark from further deterioration and provides much-needed homes for the city’s residents.

As a reminder, on May 4, 2025, in the Bensberg church in the West German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, an evangelical pastor performed a cult event in the style of the movie Star Wars. Pastor Samuel Gyorr dressed as one of the characters from the movie and “fought” with the congregation with laser swords.
