Vatican calls for urgent humanitarian aid for Ukraine

Ukraine is facing one of the harshest winters in recent years, exacerbated by massive Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. Against the backdrop of the dramatic humanitarian situation, the Vatican, represented by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Ministry of Charity, has issued an urgent appeal for help, emphasizing the inadmissibility of indifference to the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

According to Vatican News, Ukrainians have not known peace for the fourth year in a row, living in darkness at temperatures well below zero, without heating or electricity. This is the result of intense Russian raids on the capital Kiev, most recently on the night of January 19-20. Cardinal Krajewski, who has visited Ukraine at least a dozen times on behalf of the Holy See to deliver food, generators and ambulances, expressed concrete support for the RCC.

We cannot remain indifferent to pain, to suffering – we must act,” the Cardinal said, warning of the risk of a “globalization of powerlessness,” which he said is “even more serious than the globalization of indifference.” This appeal to charity was complemented by a practical appeal. Those wishing to help are asked to bring to Via Boccea 478 (in Rome) chemical hand, foot and body warmers; thermal underwear and fleece; thermal and wool socks; thermal blankets and isothermal emergency blankets; thermoses and thermos mugs; gas burners and camping cylinders; solid fuel alcohol and dry showers. Energy bars, nuts and chocolate are also being accepted. “Every contribution means warmth, food and a chance of survival for those who need it most,” emphasize the Basilica of Hagia Sophia.

Recall, recently Pope Leo XIV held talks with Vladimir Zelensky, which centered on achieving peace in the Russian-Ukrainian war. During an impromptu press conference at Castel Gandolfo, the pontiff also touched on the topics of future European security, peace initiatives and expressed cautious optimism about a possible visit to Kiev, while voicing concern about certain aspects of US President Donald Trump’s plans.
