Attack on synagogue in Michigan: driver rammed into building and opened fire

An attack on the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, USA, took place. A driver rammed into the synagogue building, which also includes an early childhood center and a school, and opened fire. The attacker was killed, and one of the security personnel was wounded and is in stable condition, CNN reports.

According to law enforcement officials, the suspect’s car broke through the building’s doors and drove down a corridor to the inside of the synagogue. When the suspect went inside, security personnel exchanged fire. One of the security guards was hit by a car and lost consciousness, but he was evacuated and hospitalized. The body of the attacker was found with burn marks, probably due to a fire inside the car. A significant amount of explosives was found in the back of the car.

In response to the incident, police in Michigan and other states increased their presence near Jewish institutions. New York Mayor Erich Adams and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack, calling it an act of anti-Semitic violence. US President Joe Biden was informed of the incident.
