A hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church emphasized the role of the Patriarch of Jerusalem in the unity of Orthodoxy

During a recent visit to Jerusalem, Metropolitan Varsonofy of St. Petersburg and Ladoga described Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem as a tireless peacemaker and defender of the canonical unity of the Orthodox Church. According to the Orthodoxia News Agency ( ), the visit took place with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

In his speech, Metropolitan Varsonofy noted that the modern world is going through difficult times, marked by ecclesiastical turmoil and armed conflicts that have engulfed the Middle East and Ukraine. Under these circumstances, according to the bishop, Patriarch Theophilos serves as an example of steadfastness and unwavering devotion to Orthodox traditions.

Metropolitan Varsonofy particularly highlighted the mission of the First Hierarch of Jerusalem to overcome divisions within the family of Local Churches, a mission carried out through prayer, wisdom, and patience. ““You set an example for the whole world of steadfastness in defending Orthodoxy,” he emphasized, adding that the Holy Land remains a source of spiritual strength and comfort for the faithful in times of trial.

As a reminder, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem had previously announced his intention to act as a mediator to end the conflict in Ukraine. The primate stated that he plans to hold talks with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to help overcome the ecclesiastical schism and stop the bloodshed.
