Authorities aim to take away another monastery from UOC in Kyiv

The Holy Trinity St. Cyril Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, located in Kyiv, is likely to lose its main shrine, St. Cyril’s Church, which is an architectural monument of national importance, in the near future. In January 2025, the term of the agreement on the use of the church, which was concluded between the State Historical and Architectural Reserve “St. Sophia of Kyiv” and the monastic community of the UOC, expires, after which, according to the norms of anti-church law No. 3894, it cannot be extended. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

“On January 30, 2025, the agreement No. 42 of March 3, 2017, on the free use (use) of the state property “St. Cyril’s Church” located at 12 Olena Teliha Street, Kyiv, and is under the operational management of the National Reserve “St. Sophia of Kyiv” expires,” — the Ministry said in its response to a request from Interfax-Ukraine, which requested information about the state property in respect of which the agreement with the religious communities of the UOC expires in 2025.

Earlier, we reported that the new anti-church law No. 3894 (formerly No. 8371) is written in such a way that it simplifies the procedure for “transferring” religious organizations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to the OCU. Thanks to this law, not only ordinary communities, but also monasteries of the UOC will now be able to transfer to the OCU.
