The state continues litigation over the Yeletsky Convent of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Chernihiv

The State Historical and Architectural Reserve “Ancient Chernihiv” continues to litigate with the Chernihiv Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church over the premises of the Holy Trinity Yeletsky Convent. The “reserve” is dissatisfied with the fact that nuns still live in the monastery premises. This was reported by “Suspilne.Chernihiv.”

“The higher court analyzed the entire case and returned it to the court of first instance to clarify some details of the legal documents and transfer acts. And now the court hearings have been going on for a long time. The rest of the premises are occupied by nuns, who use these premises, and the women’s monastery continues to function. We are awaiting a decision that these buildings will be vacated and the state, represented by the reserve, will be able to ensure the full functioning of this complex of unique monuments of national importance,” – said Natalia Rebrova, head of the reserve.

On June 16, 2025, members of the Verkhovna Rada’s parliamentary committee on humanitarian and information policy held an off-site meeting at the Transfiguration Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Chernihiv, which was expropriated from the Church by the state last year. One of the main issues discussed during the event was the increase in funding for the local Historical and Architectural Reserve “Ancient Chernihiv,” which has taken on the responsibility of maintaining the religious building in proper condition.
