Swedish PM: Recognition of Same-Sex Unions Should Be Part of Ukraine’s European Integration

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that Ukraine must ensure legal protection for LGBTQ citizens if it aims for European integration. He expressed this opinion after meeting with Ukrainian LGBT military veterans and representatives of the Swedish LGBT organization RFSL. Kristersson shared this on his Instagram page, attaching a photo with a Ukrainian gay serviceman.

“Today, same-sex couples cannot marry or enter into registered partnerships in Ukraine. Full legal protection of the rights of all minorities, including the LGBTQ community, is for us an important part of Ukraine’s European rapprochement, and we support this,” the politician said.

He reminded that minority rights are part of the criteria for EU membership. At the same time, the legalization of same-sex marriages is not explicitly required by the European Union. Furthermore, the Ukrainian Constitution defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman — changing this would require a constitutional amendment.

The Prime Minister also expressed support for Ukrainian soldiers from the LGBT community:
“They risk their lives on the front line and are a living embodiment of the liberal values that Ukraine is fighting for,” Kristersson said.

He added that Sweden, as a country that supports Ukraine, will closely monitor developments in the field of minority rights.

Earlier we also reported that from August 30 to September 6, another gay pride event — KharkivPride 2025 — will take place in the frontline city of Kharkiv. Organizers have announced the theme of the event: “Together for Equality and Victory.”
